Today I propose you a quick tutorial of upcycling. If like me you have a full bag of old t-shirts that you do not wear anymore (a stain that never left, small holes around the waist…), it’s time to take advantage of them to turn them into underwear and more precisely into panties.

If you feel you are a dressmaker, let’s go:

Equipment :

  • An old T-shirt in jersey or cotton with elastane. The important thing is that it has a little elasticity.
  • 1m50 / 2m elastic.
  • A sewing machine with elastic stitch.

1st step:

Take one of your favorite panties and mark the outline of the front, back and bottom reinforcement part. You can only mark the left side, then fold the sheet to mark the other side. You will get a symmetrical pattern.

You have now 3 pieces of pattern.

2nd step:

Cut out these 3 pieces in your T-shirt. Personally I can do 2 panties in a T-shirt, one on the front and the other one on the back.

3rd step:

Mount your pieces together. Put the reinforcement part facing you (the back part down), then the back piece of panties over it, right side facing you too. And to finish the sandwich, add the front part of the panties facing the table. Join the bottom of the 3 elements and sew with a zig-zag stitch.

Do the same for the sides of the pants, right sie against right side.

4th step:

Your already have the shape, now let’s do the details. Attach the bottom reinforcement of panties to the sides of your panties with a zig-zag stitch.

5th step:

Now rubber bands: measure part of the waist and thigh part parts and remove 10%. For example if the waist is 70 cm, remove 10%, 7 cm and cut 63 cm of elastic.

Attach the elastic at the waist and thighs with a zig-zag stitch by pulling the fabric so that it fits all the way. You can either leave the elastic visible, or turn it on itself and do a second sewing according to your tastes!

And that’s it, your upcycling panties are now over! You can decorate it with small elements like tulle, or a small knot. It’s up to you to be creative.
