A T-shirt is one of the basics of our wardrobe. And if we do not want to be buying new ones every 3 months, we will have to sharpen our eyes to determine the quality of these famous T-shirts.
Who did not find holes their clothes after a first wash? Frustration has often made me ban brands for the quality of their T-shirts.
So what are we going to look for?
The material is an essential element for the choice of our T-shirt, especially if we want to wear it in summer!
Linen is light, absorbent and dries quickly. Its main disadvantage is that it is creased very easily. It is often mixed with cotton to counterbalance this negative point.
Cotton is very comfortable to wear for a T-shirt. It is resistant and absorbent (perfect for summer). In negative point, it does not keep warm. Organic cotton (grown without chemicals) is often softer than conventional cotton.
Polyester: it has the advantage of not creasing and not pilling. However it is not breathable and therefore not advisable for a T-shirt.
Viscose: it has a silky touch and easy maintenance.
Mixes of fabrics:
Generally speaking, I do not advise mixes of fabrics, especially when more than three materials. These are clothes that are subsequently impossible to recycle.
For cotton t-shirts, we often find a small part of elastane to give it elasticity. But it is often in small quantity (maximum 4%)
The grammage of the fabric, even if it is not the only element, is important to define the quality and durability of the fabric. Very light weights will be more likely to be damaged.
T-shirts less than 140 grams: these are low-end t-shirts, which are very thin. Unfortunately, they will spend little time in your dressing room. You can still recycle in panties by following my tutorial here!
T-shirts between 140 and 160 grams: these are standard grammages. They are found on most prêt-à-porter t-shirts. They will last a little longer.
The T-shirts of more than 160 grams: it is obviously of heavier density which give a better quality of fabric. They will last longer in your wardrobes. FYI, the Gaston in Barcelona t-shirts have a grammage of 160 grams.
Another important point for the choice of t-shirts is the opacity. It is generally preferred to have a non-transparent t-shirt, which is not often the case for white t-shirts.
If you are in store, direct your T-shirt towards a source of light and you will be able to appreciate its transparency. An opaque T-shirt will last more time.
