Entering the world of entrepreneurship and working at home can quickly become a challenge. I think this way of life is not suitable for everyone. I have always loved teleworking when I worked in marketing agencies, it was definitely more efficient and quiet especially for conference calls. Working in an open space can sometimes become noisy!
Today I give you my advices to work healthily from home. The important thing is to balance your professional and personal life by avoiding mixing the two. It took me a while to understand it, but I am improving every day.
Tip # 1: get a workspace, an office
I started my life as an entrepreneur working between the kitchen bar and my sofa. The pain in my back that appeared quickly made me understand that it was not a good idea. So I decided to fix a small workspace in the guest room. So obviously we do not all have an extra room, but it is always possible to find a small space in the living room, or in the bedroom. The goal is to have a space that tells us: “Here, I work for my company”.
I leave you two photos found on Pinterest that illustrate this lack of space. A desk in a wall opening, or behind a door! Everything is really possible.
Then, if you have little floor space, think of wall shelves. You can put beautiful green plants and decoration that inspires you.
Tip # 2: Create 2 sessions on your computer
If your computer is the same as your personal computer, I invite you to create 2 sessions and to differentiate them with wallpapers. I put the wallpaper of the pattern of my brand for the profesional part and a family photo on my personal session, so no doubt!
So when I finish my work day, I close the session of Gaston in Barcelona and if need my personal computer, I open the other session.
Tip # 3: Open to others, listen to advice
By working alone all day, you can easily close yourself and lock yourself in this loop. It’s not because you do not have colleagues on a daily basis that you can not see people.
When you meet your friends, at night or on weekends, you should discuss your project, listen to their advice. They will surely have an interesting idea or one that opens the door to others.
Think about the groups and clubs of entrepreneurs in your city or region. They often organize events and you will see that you are far from being alone in choosing the path of entrepreneurship. It’s always an opportunity to participate in courses and to develop your network. Whether the contacts are useful or not immediately, take advantage of these moments to exchange.
Tip # 4: Create a break moment to stop working
Once your workday is over, create a break moment. This one allows you to change your state of mind and to follow with your personal life in a serene way.
Several ways to do it:
- chat with your partner or flatmate,
- go out for a run,
- play sports,
- go to a class
- or walk for 20 minutes.
The important thing is to change the air, stop thinking about your project to be able to live your life fully.
And of course, think about turning off your computer or changing the session!
Tip 5: optimize your journeys
As part of my project, I often have journeys to go to see suppliers. I often feel like I’m wasting time on my work day and that can be stressful.
My technique is to listen to podcasts related to my work or inspiring to awaken my creativity. I especially like podcasts with interviews of entrepreneurs, designers or about the world of fashion.
There is always a piece of advice, an idea to draw from it.
